About this blog

I used to run a site called The Bulldawg Blawg. I always wanted to name it The Junkyard Blawg, but that name was taken at the time. Now? I'm gonna do what I want at Dawgs Central.

Howard's Second Chance

As the Dawgs head to Los Angeles looking to be the first repeat National Champions in the history of the College Football Playoff, there's a side story that I'm excited about. Scott Howard gets a chance to call a second national championship game, something Larry Munson was never able to do. In fact, Larry Munson didn't even get to call the only national championship Georgia won during his career. Think about it. Everyone remembers their favorite Larry Munson call, and it's a bit of a personal p

Happy New Year

As 2022 comes to a close, I've spent some time reflecting on just how far this Georgia program has come. After the Dawgs won the National Championship, an installment of the SEC Network's "SEC Storied" series proclaimed 2021 as The Year of the Dawg. And what have the Dawgs done as an encore in 2022? Oh you know, just go 13-0 for the first time in program history and enter the College Football Playoff as the number 1 seed. We've gone from wondering if Georgia would ever win a national title

Taking from the Portal

The early signing period comes to a close today, and according to the 247Sports Composite the Dawgs hauled in the number 2 signing class behind only Alabama (hang the banner in Tuscaloosa). While this year's events were not as crazy with last minute flips as we've seen in the past, it's also been paired with the first ever transfer portal window. Now, the transfer window is where people outside of the Georgia program are going to focus. Get ready folks, the hot takes are on the way. People

Repeating vs. Reporting

Bulldog Nation, rightfully so, was up in arms over comments made by ESPN's Todd McShay about Jalen Carter having "character issues" this week. In case you missed it, here's the clip. We've seen account after account, many in the replies to Jon's tweet embedded above, of people coming to Carter's defense. We've seen it from fans, teammates, alumni, and even other media members. The primary defense I've seen for McShay is that he's simply "doing his job" and "reporting what he hears

History Repeats Itself

30 years ago, Georgia was preparing to face off against Ohio State in a bowl game. While that would be enough to open up a blog about a nod to the past, 1992 was also the last time Georgia had a Heisman trophy finalist in Garrison Hearst. Georgia is now set to face Ohio State for the second time in history at the Peach Bowl in a College Football Playoff Semifinal, while The Mailman Stetson Bennett is in New York trying to deliver a Heisman in his Super Senior season. First, let's take a loo

The Pursuit of Perfection

Earlier this week, a friend of mine was surprised about how I was talking about this weekend's SEC Championship game. He asked me, "Isn't this game meaningless?" My response was quick and to the point, "Um, no." I cannot get onboard with a conference title being meaningless. Not yet, at least (I'll save my feelings on the playoff expanding in 2024 for another day). I especially cannot get on board with this SEC Championship being meaningless for this Georgia team. First of all, Georgia

Clean Old Fashioned Hate

This is not a friendly rivalry. All you have to do is look at the name. It's not called Clean Old Fashioned Love. It's not called Clean Old Fashioned Fun. This is Clean Old Fashioned Hate. If you're of any generation younger than myself, I get the logic behind your underestimation of Georgia Tech. Georgia is 17-3 against Georgia Tech since Mark Richt's first season in 2001. But let me tell you something. I went off to college as a wide eyed freshman thinking we'd never lose to Georgia

The Loudest Block I Ever Heard

I've been feeling nostalgic about the 2002 Georgia Bulldogs this week. This Wednesday was the 20th anniversary of Georgia beating Auburn to win the SEC East for the first time in program history. This nostalgia had me thinking about the 2002 trip I took up to Kentucky. The Dawgs absolutely dominated Kentucky that day, 52-24. David Greene and DJ Shockley combined to throw six touchdown passes, setting a school record (Note: that record has since been matched twice, including by Stetson

Last Win at Mississippi State

It's been 17 years since Georgia won a football game at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville. To be fair, Georgia has only lost one game at Mississippi State in the same span. The opening stat is really just a function of how infrequently these teams play. It is a little crazy that this is only the 26th meeting all time between these two founding members of the Southeastern Conference. But let's go back to that 2005 game. If you know me, you know that I spend a good bit of time at Fripp Island

Unprecedented Territory

For every game preview episode of My God a Podcast, we solicit questions. This week, we got a doozy from our friend Zack. I really struggled to answer this. On the podcast, I said the closest game I could think of was 2018 Kentucky. I'm sure that isn't a popular answer, but here was my logic. That game was after the Florida game, and the SEC East was on the line. My other thought was 2002 Auburn, as we had to win that game to win the SEC East and advance to our first ever SEC Cham

It's Cocktail Party Week?

How weird is it that it's Georgia/Florida week, but no one is really talking about this weekend's game? Instead, I've seen two topics dominate throughout this week. First up, the debate continues to roar on about whether this game should stay in Jacksonville or not. I wrote about that back in July on the heels of Kirby's comments to Tim Tebow at SEC Media Days, and my opinion hasn't changed. The trigger this week was the joint statement issued by the schools on Monday. While I'm glad the sc

Protect the Puppies

On Saturday, the Dawgs will face Vanderbilt as the Homecoming opponent for the 25th time. You will get to see everything you've come to associate with a Homecoming game at Georgia: former cheerleaders pumping up the crowd, former Redcoat Band members performing, and the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen. However, you may also notice a lot of pink in the Sanford Stadium crowd. That's because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer is asking everyone t

The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry's Craziest Games

On Saturday, Georgia will take the field against Auburn in the 127th edition of The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. We got a great question on My God a Podcast this week about our favorite crazy game over the years from our buddy @5127GATA on Twitter. Here's how he framed the question: I mentioned on the podcast that I remember exactly where I was for each of these, but I didn't go into each story because, well, the podcast is long enough as it is. So, I'm going to do that now. In 19

Grown Man Football

It's hard to believe that it's been 10 years since Georgia's first trip to COMO. Missouri joined the SEC, along with Texas A&M, back in 2012. You may or may not remember that Missouri was a trendy upset pick that week, even though they entered the game unranked while the Dawgs were ranked 7th in the AP and Coaches' poll. You probably do remember Missouri's Sheldon Richardson referring to Georgia's style of play as "Old Man Football." While that didn't work out very well for Richardson i

On the Mystery of Georgia Not Playing at Texas A&M

You probably came across Matt Hayes piece over at SDS called No Georgia at Texas A&M? Why? Break out the conspiracy theories on Wednesday of this week. I certainly saw it, and I immediately called out Hayes for his poor logic (much to the chagrin of Chris Marler). Be careful what you wish for Chris, as I will now explain how the SEC schedule works (or worked). In 2012, Missouri and Texas A&M joined the SEC. Those two teams joined as cross division rivals in 2012 and 2013 before

Georgia Football's Cryptic Uniform Tweet

I had an entirely different blog planned, but I'm a sucker for #UniformTwitter. In case you missed this, the official Georgia Football Twitter account dropped this on Thursday night. Uniform Twitter was sent into a tizzy with everyone assuming this was some kind of alternate uniform tease. Let's head to the replies. This from HBTFD89 may be my favorite theory. Many fans have been clamoring for the actually silver britches from days gone by as opposed to the gray pants worn by the

Georgia's History With Samford

While doing my extensive prep for our Samford preview episode of My God a Podcast, I came across something that was a little odd. For every game, we start off talking about some simple matchup items. When is the game? What channel is it on? What's the weather look like? But we also call out the all time record against each opponent. I generally pull this from the history that Georgia posts for every opponent. According to the history page for Samford, Georgia is 1-0 all time against the Bulldogs

Two Words of Advice

The season has arrived, and for the first time since September 5th, 1981 Georgia will step on the field in the season opener as the defending national champions. As Georgia fans, we've enjoyed the most relaxing off-season in over 40 years. No regrets. No what ifs. We did the dang thing. But now as we embark on a new season, I'm sure it won't take long for the old habits to take hold again. Folks will be "Munsoning" over this or that. It's inevitable. Having said that, I do have two words of

Should We Worry About the Inside Linebackers?

The consensus concern about Georgia's defense seems to be around the inside linebackers. I've been thinking about this a lot myself, and I've been trying to find a reason to feel better about the fact that we lost Nakobe Dean, Channing Tindall, and Quay Walker. What I came to realize was my main concern was continuity. For the past several years, we've returned the top (if not the top two) leading tacklers amongst linebackers. There's also been a passing of the leadership torch within the h

I Can Feel It

Every year it happens. There's a singular moment when I take my first step outside on a late summer morning and "it" is there. Is it the lower than normal temperature? Is it the smell of the neighbor's freshly mowed lawn? What exactly the triggering factor is varies from year to year, but it always gives me that same feeling. "Football is coming." This year, I've been waiting for the day to come. It almost got to the point where was trying to force it. In my mind, it was taking too long. I

Are We Overthinking This?

Rewind a year. What was everyone talking about? Was it that Georgia was about to field an all time defense? No. Not even close. Every talking point heading into 2021 was about Kirby Smart coming around to the idea of the modern offense. Georgia was about to unleash an air raid attack on the SEC with JT Daniels at the helm. And then the Clemson game came. Now to be fair, Georgia had a rash of injuries that contributed to that against Clemson. Go back and watch that game. It's crazy to look a

The Question We're All Waiting to be Answered

Fall camp officially started yesterday, and with that came the first round of official press conferences for Kirby Smart and a handful of players. With that, I'm here to talk about the question that is still on everyone's mind. And of course, I'm talking about what the team and fans are going to wear in the showdown with Oregon. Laugh if you will, but a quick perusal of Twitter will show a lot of people asking these questions. And my main point in writing this is that I wish Georgia would j

Save the Cocktail Party

After one question from Tim Tebow to Kirby Smart about the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, the debate has been raging on for an entire week as to whether the game should stay in Jacksonville or move to some other format. The debate ranged from cries of abandoning tradition to deep dive analysis into the contract between the schools and the city of Jacksonville. In case you missed it, here's the interaction that seems to have started all of this. I started to type that I've
