History Repeats Itself

30 years ago, Georgia was preparing to face off against Ohio State in a bowl game. While that would be enough to open up a blog about a nod to the past, 1992 was also the last time Georgia had a Heisman trophy finalist in Garrison Hearst. Georgia is now set to face Ohio State for the second time in history at the Peach Bowl in a College Football Playoff Semifinal, while The Mailman Stetson Bennett is in New York trying to deliver a Heisman in his Super Senior season.

First, let's take a look at the 1992 Citrus Bowl between the Dawgs and the Buckeyes. The 1992 season was Georgia's best under Ray Goff. The Dawgs finished 10-2 with an offense bolstered not only by the aforementioned Hearst, but quarterback Eric Zeier and receiver Andre Hastings. The Buckeyes had some stars of their own, most notably in Robert Smith. Ohio State's signal caller in 1992 was a 5th year quarterback by the name of Kirk Herbstreit. Maybe you've heard of him. Let's take a look back at the highlights from that game, which also feature Terrell Davis, Mack Strong, Shannon Mitchell, Mitch Davis, and a young Damon Evans.

Now let's talk about the 1992 Heisman Trophy. This is a pretty cool piece from College Gameday pitting Garrison Hearst against Marshall Faulk as frontrunners for the Heisman.

To the dismay of Nicole Auerbach, the quarterback of the number 1 team in the nation won that trophy. Gino Torretta won the Heisman over Hearst and Faulk. Here's the entire ceremony, which only runs 8 minutes and 11 seconds.

We'll find out if things turn out differently for Stetson than they did for Hearst when the Heisman trophy winner is revealed Saturday night at 8pm EST on ESPN. Something tells me this ceremony will be a little longer than 8 minutes. Stay tuned to Dawgs Central throughout the weekend as our very own @Jason Brassell is on the scene in New York.

Go Dawgs!
