Official Dawgs Central Prediction - Caleb Downs

In-state safety Caleb Downs has been a top target for Georgia for the majority of his recruitment. UGA has made him a priority target for not only his position, but for the 2023 class as a whole. The 5* safety is one of the most college ready prospects in this class. His speed, athleticism, anticipation, and football IQ are all off the charts. These factors make him an almost can't miss for the Dawgs. Kirby Smart and company would love to pair him with fellow 5* safety and recent commit, Joenel Aguero. The pair would be one of the nastiest safety duos in all of college football.

Unfortunately, we do not have Downs choosing UGA on the 27th. The Dawgs have been in a huge battle with Alabama and Ohio State to convince Downs that their program is the best one for him. At times, it looked as if Georgia would be the team. That is also the case for the Crimson Tide and the Buckeyes. Downs took official visits to all three schools in June, along with Notre Dame. The Irish are on the outside looking in on this one.

There are other interesting dynamics to consider in this recruitment. Downs' brother is currently the star receiver at UNC. Georgia didn't recruit him very hard out of high school. His father is currently a college coach who obviously knows the college landscape. He is very good friends with a recruit who shocked the world last week, Justice Haynes. He has been very calculated in his recruitment when it comes to choosing a school and as it pertains to answering questions from the media.

Saying that, as much as Georgia has made Downs a priority, it looks like he will be on the commit list of another school come the 27th. I do not believe there is anything that Kirby Smart and company did wrong here. You win some and you lose some. The same goes for Ohio State, as he has very good relationships with the staff there. In the end, it just wasn't enough for the two powerhouse programs.

PREDICTION - ALABAMA
