COMMIT! Big Time Speedster to UGA
There hasn't been as much "hoopla" involving Georgia and the 2023 class as there was in previous classes, with most of the hay being in the barn for Kirby Smart and company. How glad were you when Nakobe Dean chose the Dawgs out of the 3-5 teams he was still considering on signing day? How about the last minute flip of George Pickens from in-state Auburn to UGA? That's my favorite recruiting memory between the Dawgs and my most hated team in the entire world!
There has been one prospect who we've had on flip watch for the past couple of months. Kyron Jones committed to the in-state team, the NC State Wolfpack on October 1st. He took an unofficial visit to UGA the last weekend in November and was in Athens for his official visit last weekend. The Dawgs gained a ton of momentum in a short period of time, with DB coach Fran Brown instumental in his recruitment. While he did take a last weekend before signing day visit to Nebraska, it was Georgia who was the biggest threat to NC State.
Jones just decommitted from the Wolfpack on Monday, setting up Georgia to receive his pledge today. While the speedster has been recruited as mainly a running back (and he can sure run the ball), Kirby Smart and his staff have shown him that his long term potential is at the cornerback position. With Smart, Brown, and Will Muschamp on staff, he has three of the best coaches in the nation to develop him into a NFL shutdown corner.
Listed at 6'0 200 pounds, he might be thicker than former Georgia CB Eric Stokes, but he'll further his career in much the same way Stokes did. In the meantime, don't be surprised if you see him on the field early in Athens returning kicks.
