Weekly Recruiting Review - Dawg Fans Got a Shocker and Three Big Commits

The third full week in July may have been the craziest week of them all for Dawg fans. There were plenty of commitments, rumors of commitments, rumors of flips, and everything else you could think of. If you follow recruiting closely, it was enough to you busy all day chasing down news. That's why we at Dawgs Central do our best to chase down the news for you.

One commitment that NOBODY was ready for was that of Justice Haynes. It's not the date that was the shocker, it's the fact that he committed to Alabama over UGA. I'm not sure even Nick Saban knew this was going to happen. All signs pointed towards Georgia being in a great place in the wekks leading up to his commitment. This is one that we may never know the truth about what really happened. Is this one over? I'm not sure..........

As far as commitments elsewhere, edge Rico Walker made his decision for in-state UNC on the 18th. The Dawgs kicked the tires on him some early on. Malik Muhammad is another prospect who had UGA's attention early in his recruitment. The 4* corner committed to in-state Texas on the 20th. Olaus Alinen is the other former target who committed elsewhere last week. The 4* OL from Finland announced Alabama as his college football destination yesterday.

While all three of these athletes could turn out to be great players for their respective teams, Georgia pulled in a haul this week that may very well contribute to another national title run. My #1 target in this class on defense and #2 target overall behind a certain quarterback who will remain nameless, has always been Jamaal Jarrett. Stop (but don't stop) if you've heard this before, but the Dawgs were able to go into North Carolina and pull the 350 pounder away. He also has Auburn in his top three, but this was mainlya  two team battle. The second commit of the week came from the state of Georgia and from a very familiar place. Four star offensive lineman Kelton Smith out of Carver-Columbus 'Committed to the G' yesterday. Of course Dell McGee had a big part in his recruitment, while he also connected with Stacy Searels. Teams such as Florida, Texas A&M, and LSU tried to make a push, but the home state connection was too much to take Smith away from Athens. Of course the five star commitment came just hours ago, as Joenel Aguero announced live on CBS Sports HQ that he would be taking his talents to UGA. The 5* safety came down to UGA, Florida, and Miami. The Hurricanes suppsedly made a big push at the end, but I believe it was mostly wishful thinking from fans and analysts more than anything. This one looked to be over for a while with the Dawgs in control for the past couple of months and we have Will Muschamp to thank for it. Fran Brown also played a big role, along with recruiting staffer David Cooper.

As we're playing catch up from only starting Dawgs Central on June 1st, we had our 'Official Dawgs Central Predictions' in for Aguero and Smith to the Dawgs. We put in one for Jamaal Jarrett on July 13th. We'll continue to put in our predictions weekly, then get ahead on the remaining 2023 targets after the summer is over.
