  • Will Georgia Get London Humphreys Back This Week?

Different football programs have used the transfer portal in different ways. While Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs haven’t necessarily used the transfer portal to build an entire team, they have brought in players to strategically supplement the core of the football program that has come mostly through the high school ranks. The Dawgs have relied on Florida transfer Trevor Etienne as the lead running back so far this season, while Missouri transfer Dominic Lovett is now in his second year with the team and has proven to be the most reliable receiver in the red and black.

A key transfer who has become somewhat of an enigma is Vanderbilt transfer London Humphreys. The 6’2 200 pound speedster grabbed Georgia’s attention in 2023 when he took a 10 yard slant pass and flew through the Georgia defense 49 yards for what would be Vanderbilt’s first touchdown against Georgia since 2018.

He transferred to UGA in the offseason and quickly flashed in his first action as a Georgia Bulldog in game one against Clemson. Humphreys caught a skinny post in the fourth quarter and outran the Clemson defense to the left sideline and down the field for a 40 yard touchdown. He finished the game with two catches for 63 yards, but that was the last time he recorded a stat for the Bulldogs.

Humphreys played 20 snaps without recording a catch in the blowout against Tennessee Tech, while also recording 15 snaps the next week where the Georgia offense struggled against Kentucky’s powerful defense. It was then discovered that he had mononucleosis sometime during the bye week and the week leading up to the Alabama game.

Humphreys was ruled out on the injury report for the Alabama game and was also ruled out in the initial injury report on Wednesday of this week. Yesterday’s report placed him in the probable category, which would give him a good chance to play against Auburn if his status stays the same today and tomorrow. This could mean a lot for a Georgia offense that has struggled to get going in the first half of games this season.

Humphreys not only gives Mike Bobo’s offense more depth, he’s another player that is a threat to take it to the house for six points every time he catches the football. Having No. 16 back in the lineup would allow Georgia to play multiple speedsters at one time. The Bulldogs could go with the duo of Humphreys and Arian Smith, while they could also add Anthony Evans to the mix and play with an abundance of speed all over the field.

Whether he returns tomorrow against Auburn or the week after, Humphreys can make the Georgia offense better and more explosive. You can bet that Kirby Smart and the medical team are doing everything they can to help get him healthy and back out on the field.

That  would be a quick recovery from mono. I can’t see how he would have the energy to compete. The acute course usually lasts 2-4 weeks and it can take months to recover. The danger to him is that both the spleen and/or liver can swell with the risk of rupturing with contact, which can be a life threatening event. Don’t think we see him for a while.
