SIlas Demery Jr. and Asa Newell were at it again Tuesday night at Stegeman Coliseum. The dynamic duo led the Georgia Bulldogs to a dominant 93-45 victory over Alabama A&M. The 48-point win was Georgia's largest margin of victory since November 10, 2006, when it defeated Southern by 60 points (97-37). The win improved Georgia’s record to 5-0, as Mike White and his team head into the meat of their schedule.
Newell paced the Bulldogs with 17 points, while Demery Jr. put in 15 points of his own from the point guard position. Tyrin Lawrence and Somto Cyril joined the pair as double digit scorers, contributing 12 points and 11 points. Cyril was one rebound away from recording a double-double.
After a slow start UGA used their home court advantage to go on an 11-0 run early in the first half. The Dawgs never looked back after that, rolling to a 46-25 halftime lead. Demery had 10 of his 15 points in the first half. Blue Cain got hot in the second half, making three of four three point shots. Dakota Leffew and RJ Godfrey also contributed nine points each. Ten Bulldogs overall were able to make at least one basket in the blowout. Georgia also recorded seven blocks and 16 steals in one of their best defensive performances of the season.
White was happy with the performance, but knows that his team still has some growing to do.
"We're all trying to grow as programs and as teams," head coach Mike White said. "That's just something that stuck out to us here recently. We've been really good at times defensively, but have we put 40 together. That's what the good teams do. That's what the top of our league is going to do. It's a process to get there, and I thought we took some steps there today where the detail is great. We know they touched the paint probably too many times off of the bounce, but fortunately, we have guys that are back there erasing some mistakes, as we've talked about a lot over the past few months. Our execution versus a lot of their changing disruptive defenses wasn't pretty at times, but our effort was certainly there throughout, and as strong as it was all game in those last few minutes, which is growth."
Georgia already has a couple of impressive performances this season, highlighted by wins over Georgia Tech and a strong North Florida team, but White is about to find out just what these Bulldogs are made of. Their next two games will be in the Bahamas at The Atlantis Paradise Island Resort, where the Bulldogs will face No. 15 Marquette on Saturday and No. 22 St John’s on Sunday. Tip Off time for the contest against the Golden Eagles is at 11 a.m. ET and will be broadcast on FloHoops. The Bulldogs game against the Red Storm will also be at 11 a.m. ET and will be shown on CBS Sports Network.
